Book AppointmentThe Basics
The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections. Lymphatic vessels, tissues, organs, and glands work together to drain a watery fluid called lymph from throughout the body.
Lymphatic massage is a very light, gentle touch that helps fluid move through your body. Slow skin-stretching strokes guide swelling toward your lymph nodes and back toward your heart.
A regular massage uses deeper pressure to work on muscles. Lymphatic massage is much lighter, because the majority of vessels that carry lymph sit just under your skin. Pressing too hard can flatten them, like stepping on a garden hose. Light touch helps the hose move things along faster.
Swelling is the most common sign. Some people also notice headaches, tiredness, getting sick often, sore throats, constipation, or skin rashes when their system is running slow. Many things can cause these, so check with your doctor if they are new or worrying. Not sure? Book a session and talk through your goals together.
Absolutely. Lots of people come in simply because they want to feel lighter and have more energy.
Your Visit
Your appointment begins with a personalized consultation. You will be asked what brought you in, where you notice swelling, how long it has been there, any past surgeries, and what you have already tried. Then you will relax through a gentle session of light strokes, and you will leave with simple tips for keeping things moving at home.
Plan to arrive hydrated and wearing comfortable clothing. Skip a heavy meal beforehand. Please arrive a few minutes early so you have time to settle in before your treatment begins.
Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. If you are new to lymphatic massage, 60 minutes is a great starting point to see how your body responds.
Magnolia Lymphatic Studio is in the Camden Office Park, Building 8211, Suite D, on Summa Avenue in Baton Rouge, between Bluebonnet Boulevard and Essen Lane. Parking is plentiful.
Results & Frequency
Most people feel light and relaxed, and many sleep really well that night. Some notice a mild headache or tiredness, since your body is busy processing. Rest if you need to and keep up with your water intake. If you can, take a walk, because gentle movement helps the work continue.
It depends on what your body is telling you. For most healthy, active people, once a month is a great rhythm. To jumpstart your system, three visits close together works well: once a week for three weeks, or three within a month. After that, you can look at how you feel and space visits out.
Some conditions need a doctor's okay first. Please check with your provider if you have an active infection or fever, a blood clot, heart failure, kidney problems, or cancer. Not sure if this applies to you? Ask before you book.
Special Situations
Yes. Post-surgical lymphatic massage helps move swelling out of the treated area. With your surgeon's approval, sessions can begin as early as three days after surgery. Drains and compression garments are fine. A common schedule is twice a week for the first two weeks, then once a week for two weeks, then every other week until your body is moving at a pace that feels good to you. Your sessions will start out light and progress in pressure in relation to where you are in the phases of wound healing.
Prenatal lymphatic massage is available in the second and third trimesters. Give your doctor a quick call to make sure it is right for you. If you have any pregnancy complications, your doctor's approval is required.
No. The touch is very light, and most people find it deeply relaxing. Many drift off during their session.
